It's An Icicle! + Interview

Happy New Year, Everybody!

Sorry for not posting anything in the last while, I've just been busy with a lot of things that have to deal with school, work, art, music, and personal stuff so being a creative person is very hard on the mind a lot of times. But BOY am I glad to have this new year start off with an ABSOLUTE BANGER of a band I discovered a few years prior and would love to share with all of yall.

Special Thanks to David Vaipan for helping me provide the files for their music to make this possible. I am proud to make this post and share to you guys a band possibly nobody but a few redditors and the members themselves have heard of.

It's An Icicle was a 3-piece indie math-rock band from Fresno, California that was active from May 2007 to August 2009. Originally starting out as a 2-piece with David Vaipan and Manuel Aparicio, they would be inspired by the likes of well-known twinkly emo math-rock type bands such as Algernon Cadwallader, Giraffes? Giraffes!, along with any project that had the Kinsella Brothers. After their first release, Kameron Johnson would be the third member to complete the trio with his twinkly, jazzy riffs that would add well to the new record, L'Chaim. They would break up following their West Coast tour in 2009.

Back in December 2021, I was up late at night listening to a Robert Frost interview on YouTube while doing homework. It was around 1am and everyone was sleeping. When the interview ended, I heard the acoustic song that played and instead of just leaving to another video like I usually do, I instead stayed to listen to it because I thought it sounded peaceful for the night. That was until it started to fade into another song that sounded different. I listened to it and once it had faded back to the acoustic song, I honestly thought I was hallucinating it from being up for so long. I played it back and sure enough, yup, it was real and I wasn't hallucinating or going crazy.

I kept repeating that part over and over again, thinking "God damn, this is good!" and then would try to decipher the lyrics to find the full song but to no avail. It wasn't until a few days later when I would have a redditor find it for me. The song was "Don Juan" and it came out with their first official release, It's a Bicycle. After listening to that song for a while, I just kinda stopped and didn't think to consider the rest of the Album for a while until the next month. That was when I realized that it just disappeared.

It disappeared off of everything where their music would be streamed and I regretted that I didn't listen to the rest of the Album nor had even saved it. That day, I began my months-long search for not only It's An Icicle's music, but who they were also. After months of searching, scrolling through many old articles, and posting way too many reddit posts in lost media subreddits, the drummer, David Vaipan, would discover the posts and would reached out to me and posting all of the band's recordings on a Google drive. This was a huge surprise on my end and I was all cheery with excitement when I finally got their discography and immediately saved it into my files, now having found their music.

Over a year has passed since and I made this blog in order to document and preserve music from any and all bands from the South West region of the US. This one is not really that old but is one that I MUST note and preserve for the time being. So I reached out to David to talk about It's An Icicle along with getting to know what the old Fresno Music Scene was like before it died.

This is basically the run down of it with David. Some things were either changed, skipped, or included for context.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me - Tell me a little bit about what It's An Icicle was

David - We started as a two-piece just jamming. We actually started jamming before and had a sort of fake band called Fat Free Water. Manuel was playing solo shows. I helped him record his solo record. Then we decided to start playing together. The music scene in Fresno at the time was hot. Tons of shows, tons of different bands - everything - hardcore, punk, math rock, indie, prog, different jazz groups. There was always a show going on somewhere. The name, It's an Icicle, is a reference to a few songs, but I only remember two: Trail of Dead's, "Totally Natural" and Elliott Smith's, "Last Call"

Me - I was to ask about the name and where you had got it from haha. what were some of the your guys' inspiration to your music?

David - As a solo acoustic / folk musician, Manuel was inspired by a ton of like 50's pop and folk. We referenced Chapin's, "Cats in the Cradle," in one of our songs. He dug guys like Louis Prima. He also referenced Bob Dylan in some lyrics. I can't really speak for him. I just remember him playing that. We listened to a lot of sort of pop jazz from around that time. Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald.

Me - what was your reason for playing the drums in It's An Icicle? Was it just because you guys needed a drummer?

David - I was really into emo stuff. Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, Brand New, stuff like that. Then there was this new wave of emo that was more mathy like Algernon Cadwallader and we really loved that stuff. I fucking loved Dilute. I learned how to play odd time signatures by drumming along to Dilute everywhere. in the car, on the drumset. I even recorded and uploaded me playing through to one of their records in one take because I'd memorized the drums.

We played with guys like Giraffes Giraffes, Ecstatic Sunshine, Ponytail, Maps & Atlases. Manuel was also booking tons of shows at the time. He was doing it all by himself. Labels were contacting him to get it all booked in town. Usually we never played shows he booked because he didn't want to make it seem like self promotion.

Make Believe came through town and that was fucking fun. Manuel came back from the bathroom and was like, Dude, I pissed next to Tim Kinsella! Planets and SWIMS were locals at the time I think and they inspired the music scene. Guys like Hella were playing shows here too. I forget all the bands.

Me - Pissing next to one of the Kinsella brothers sounds like a total dream to a bunch of emo nerds

David - The music scene is ENTIRELY dead in Fresno now. Nothing at all. It's genuinely tragic. The music scene was so great. Guys like Appleseed Cast, I forget them all. But everyone was coming through at the time. The bookers and promoters got so popular and big that they all left town. I moved back some years ago and immediately regretted it.

Me - I'm sure there might be a few acts if you type in "Fresno" into the bandcamp tags but unsure if any of them would be to your liking

David - Yeah, just no shows happening at all. Nearly all of the venues shut down and Covid killed the rest.

Me - Best opportunity to have those DIY house/backyard shows imo

David - Yeah! I'll tell Manuel we gotta set it up. He has a sick place for shows.

Me - where did the third member come in? I forgot his name.

David - Kameron was the other guitarist. He came in after we recorded "It's a Bicycle." He was more skilled than either of us musically. He was always practicing. He'd watch TV and just practice scales quietly on his unplugged electric guitar. I had no idea what I was doing. I was probably the least skilled musician in the group. Kameron's musical influences were more like indie pop oriented. Toward the end I started learning more. Picked up drum books. Started learning jazz. But then we broke up.

Me - I can tell they were pretty jazz leaning for sure hearing him in L'Chaim

David - It just came naturally for Kameron. He didn't even dig jazz the way Manuel and I did. He's just talented. I was pushing us for like solos and shit and they told me to calm down.

Me - speaking of albums, where did the names of the song come from? Don Juan, Stay Gold Ponyboy, etc.

David - Stay Gold, Ponyboy is a reference to the movie, The Outsiders. The "Sally" songs were a sort of double reference to a girl I liked and one of Manuel's dogs that had passed away at the time. Don Juan might be a reference to Lord Byron because I may have been reading it at the time, but I think it's just a general reference to the Don Juan character. "Integrity" was Kameron's song. He was always too shy, so we named it that to try to lift him up a bit. "Either/Or" was a reference to Kierkegaard's book that I'd read around that time. Four fore for 4 is just homophones making fun of time signatures. "I Didn't Mean Fuck You, Bright Bulbs," is Manuel insulting a girl. I thought it was in bad taste, so I renamed it, "I Just Wanna Fuck You, Bean Bag," to underscore where I thought his head was at the time. The record title, It's a Bicycle was just something that rhymed. L'Chaim just sort of captured our mood. Our third record I posthumously titled, It's a Hammer and Sickle.

O! "Donkey Kong's Song" was a song I wrote on guitar. I was writing a ton of acoustic songs at the time. Manuel liked the lyrics and sort of rewrote it. He admittedly censored it because he didn't want to curse. Some of the venues we were playing were like churches that were renting out their spaces. Some of the guys higher on the music totem pole were religious, so he didn't want to offend them specifically. "Donkey Kong" was Manuel's way to sort of make fun of me.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also reached out to Manuel where I asked him a few questions about himself, the band, and what it was like at the time.

Interview with Manuel
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me - Could you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Manuel - 33 years old. Born in Fremont, California 10-12-1990. Raised in Fresno, CA. Half Mexican Half English/Irish. I’m moving to Raleigh, NC in January. Started playing guitar at 12 years old because I didn’t make the soccer team. My middle school also put me in choir class instead of art, or wood shop. So back then it was thought to be “gay” but I didn’t mind it. That’s what started music for me.

Me - What inspired you to learn to play guitar? Any specific bands or artists?

Manuel - I was inspired by classic rock Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, prince, billy idol. I was also going to Christian youth groups at that time with my best friend Jordan. Those groups often had worship bands. I watched them and one of the guys named Phil started giving me lessons. I never really learned to play guitar in the classical or tabulated sense though. I learned enough to find what I wanted to play on the guitar.

Me - when did you meet David and what made you guys form IAI?

Manuel - I met David at Hoover High School. I think he was two years ahead of me. I met him through a mutual friend named Kameron who was in guitar class with me at the high school. I don’t remember how it happened but we started playing music together in David’s parents garage. I was 14-15 at this point. We learned some covers and I wrote some original material. We went under the name Fat Free Water. I really hated playing covers.

Up until recent years I’ve been open to it. I think because I couldn’t read tabs as quickly as kameron. He was talented, especially for his age. Kameron wasn’t with us when we first started IAI. I was also writing and performing solo under Manuel A; I was also around 15 that I started to book shows in Fresno.

Me - How was the scene in Fresno at the time?

Manuel - It was good. Talented bands. Emo, hardcore, math rock, electro rock. There were a few venues and other people bringing in shows like that. I started booking myself at a local Starbucks. Then moved to the venues and house shows. Eventually I started a business, if you can call it that, called Fresno Indie. I booked a lot of shows during that time up until I was 19.

I was bringing bands like Maps and Atlases to Fresno when I was 15 years old. Meneguar, Woods, Tera Melos, and others I don’t even remember but it was a time to be alive in Fresno at that time. Brilliant red lights. Also filling my bills with good local bands. My favorites were A pageants end, Tree Wizard, Rademacher, Tokyo death March.

Me - wow, honestly impressive to do all at that while you were that young, honestly thought you were a bit older. What was the song writing process like?

Manuel - It just happened when it did. I mostly would write everything on my own. Because again I’m not a good guitar player. I need to practice everything I write. I had great, very supportive parents and honestly had to long of a leash. I was always able to write at home and looking back I was loud. Not too loud but loud enough that I’m surprised now they didn’t mess with me much. I’d record songs on my digital camera, never facing me and post them on MySpace.

Me - what are some of the songs on the records about?

Manuel - Relationships mostly. I should listen to them and get you a better answer on that. Don Juan I think is our best song, it's about drugs and relationships amoung friends.

Me - honestly, Don Juan is my favorite from all of the releases. Something about it just kinda captures me and really is the best IAI track made imo

Manuel - Yup. It’s a great one. I don’t really care for much of the other stuff. Until the end of us really.

Me - When did Kameron decided to join the band?

Manuel - After the local success of its a bicycle. We won that recording time at a battle of the bands held at Fresno state actually. The second album had pressures inside and outside the band. That’s why it’s just okay in my opinion. Everyone felt David had too much drums. Leading on to the music to follow.

Me - what would you say was your favorite show/touring experience?

Manuel - Speeding through the snow covered border of California. We did a winter tour. The show in Seattle was cool. We were young and no body knew us. We played at this coffee/beer spot. But Seattle took care of us plenty.

Me - are/were there any other bands/music projects that you had worked It's An Icicle that you would like to include in the blog? Any upcoming things or are you just living life?

Manuel - Bitter Buffalo; Manuel A, My new name for everything will be Mannypoppy
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's An Icicle is definitely a hidden gem when talking about bands from the Southwest and it's really interesting to hear their music and the stories they have yet to share. Manuel's knowledge of the scene and skills with communication at that time helped the band get shows and go on tour when they needed to, becoming a local sensation at the time. While it seems as they have been unknown to the broader public, I hope that this blog post will help spread the good word of It's An Icicle and have their music be more known than it currently is as of now.

All of their recordings were given to me via Google drive by David so I want to thank him once again for that. These recordings are also up on all streaming platforms so listen to them on there while they are still public. They were taken down once and so to prevent it from being potentially inaccessible again, I have provided all of their material below. I hope you listen to them and become a fan as I have done also. Special bands like these deserve the recognition they never got.

Delusional Sunday

Delusional Sunday was a short-lived screamo band from Redondo Beach, California, only ever releasing two songs. They would play only about a half a dozen shows throughout the summer of 2023 starting from May before disbanding in September. Despite only having two songs, it shows their sound was headed in the direction of something more softer, slow, and melodic. The type of music that makes you cross your arms with your head gazing down at the floor with your eyes closed while your body sways from side-to-side type music. While sad that Delusional Sunday never really went anywhere, it's best to enjoy what we have currently with us right now instead of dwelling on what could've been.

Members of Delusional Sunday are also in Me+You.

The Be Happy Kids [Lost Media]

If you like Unknown bands that have a tragic, yet confusing history that deals with messed up discographies, information, and Lost media, then this is for you. There is VERY little and VERY limited information about this band online and so all of this information will be copied and pasted from the sputnikmusic site entry about them.

The Be Happy Kids formed in June of 2010 after the members met each other in a music college course. They then formed The Be Happy Kids playing intense shows in music studios and college classrooms. The band came out in 3 Compilations and a Split with Sweetness&thelight within that summer and would release a compilation of the material known as "8 Songs CDr." it is one of the bands well known releases and is far a very rare one to find though it had 3 presses.

Unfortunately, In November 2010 the bassist, Hector Muñoz, would be murdered after being stabbed at a gas station in Los Angeles causing the band to take a quick break. They would later bring his cousin Carlos to play for the band and release a 3 song 7" inch entitled "Everything has its meaning, value and ending." This would be the first official release and would have a different sound to their 8 song CD-R release. The 7" would be dedicated to their bassist and friend, Hector, and written in the back of the vinyls said "Dedicated to Hector Munoz 1991-2010."

In May 2011, the band released their last 2 songs on a limited CD/10" playing 2 more last shows before breaking up in October of that same year. Once they broke up the band gathered all the songs and as a ritual for many of the DIY scenes, they released a discography, limited CD-R and DVD. The first press was limited to 50 CDs and came with a plastic sleeve. Information about reissues are currently unknown.

In April 2012 the band gathered and played 4 reunion shows along with releasing a 2012 Demo in limited CD-R and tape. However, there is a contradiction in the release as the Discog's page says that there was a planned reunion show but never happened. There was a total of 50 CDs planned for release but since there was no reunion show, only 4 CDs were actually made. Since then, there have been plans for a reunion or new release.

Despite this band being not all that old, there is barely any information about them online and their bandcamp is not at all reliable as it only contains Tunes For Bears To Listen to which is a band from Miami, Florida and NOT in the South West Area (they're still awesome tho.) I've tried to find more information about the band including messaging a member and the contributors but there seems to be nothing aside from the SputnikMusic entry. If you are interested in Lost Media and would like to help find The Be Happy Kids' discography then please contribute to the Lost Media Wiki Forum Entry if you have any other information or leads that could help lead to finding any music related to this band.

OneWayMirror + Interview

Onewaymirror is a Kittencore Screamo band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2022, they have posted several demos, one ep, and two splits. Their high pitched squeals and lofi recording quality of their music creates what I feel like is a mix of Flowers Taped to Pens with Gas Up Yr Hearse! with a dash of In Loving Memory. While these young kids haven't been around that long, they've already made a pretty decent sized catalog of music with over a dozen songs and will likely continue to make music. They are self described as "four on the floor hardcore" and from watching their live shows, they will definitely have you rolling around on the ground after exhausting yourself from their music.

This Monday, August 28th, I managed to get the band members to sit together for a quick amateur interview via the band's Insta DMs. The following is a nearly copy and paste transcript of it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me -  Alright, to start off, tell me about onewaymirror and the band members.

The Band - Harris 14 (vocals) Milo 16 (Drums) Tate 15 (Guitar) Henry 16 (Bass)

Me - WOW, you guys are younger than I thought haha. I assumed yall would be older than 16 or so.

The Band - Haha everyone thinks that

Me - How did you guys meet up and come up with the idea of starting a screamo band with each other?

The Band - Me, Milo and Harris all were into screamo and we had wanted to start a band for awhile. We tried doing a band as a 3 piece for a whole but it became owm after we met Henry at a sleep away camp and asked him to play bass.

Me - What are/were some of your guys' inspirations to OWM's sound?

The Band - Definitely a lot of heavier 90s screamo stuff when we were starting like Orchid and Hassan I Sabbah. Now while writing our LP, we are more inspired by The Great Redneck Hope and early 2000’s metalcore/screamo stuff

Me - I was about to ask about plans for a new release/LP of yours tho but I guess that question has already been answered. I like the new direction you guys are heading towards, especially with the Burial Etiquette split and the BSDJ comp song (which by the way is awesome and I'm glad to have my solo project, Snail Trails, be next to you.) How do you feel about your music growing this much attraction in just a short amount of time?

The Band - Thank you that’s super nice we really have always wanted to play this style but annoyingly our demo, the first EP, got way bigger than we had hoped and we weren’t good enough at our instruments to play what we wanted yet lol. We think it’s super cool that it’s gained the attraction it has, we never thought in such a short amount of time that anyone would really care or take interest in what we do for fun, haha, but it’s nice to see that the things we do can have a positive impact on people!

Me - What are your guys' thoughts on the SoCal hardcore scene, bands like Knumears, Vs Self, Widowdusk, etc. and how larger and wide spread the scene has been getting?

The Band - I don’t think it’s the bands fault that they’ve gotten so big, it’s just the accessibility of their music and the type of places they’ve been playing. I think its great for screamo and bands as a whole, but sucks for the bands/people trying to keep it underground and rooted in hardcore values. Personally we don’t care at all about growing as a band and making decisions for other people, we're super grateful for the people that have found us and connected with the music but we only play to deal with shit in our lives and express emotions we can’t put into words

Me - alright then. Final question for the blog. Is there anything you guys would like to shout out or promote?

The Band - BSDJ and Jean Scene they’re doing super cool shit for screamo and DIY. And listen to gonewithyou

Me - Haven't heard of them but will def check em out!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Onewaymirror is definitely a unique band. they have been my latest obsession in the SoCal hardcore scene. With Harris' bird screeching screams and Milo's fast, yet complex drumming the way they all play makes them stand out as in kittencore screamo. They may be young and just having fun but they are hella talented for sure. If you're into the 90s hardcore sound of high pitched vocals with amateur mixing then these guys will definitely be the ones for you.

Cry The Monarch + Update

Before total liberation, before the conquest of crust, before social obsession, before Lagrimas, there was Cry The Monarch.

Cry The Monarch was a 3-piece atmospheric screamo band from Pomona, California that probably lasted from 2014 to 2017. Overall, the band is very obscure with little to no online presence and is relatively unknown to the modern day diy socal scene but I feel as it is important to note for any fans of Lagrimas. Cry The Monarch's discography is relatively short, having only one official EP + 2 singles which are just the two songs featured in that EP. Their music is very fuzzy with an atmospheric touch which when listening to it, you can clearly hear how similar this is to what would later become Lagrimas' sound.

(Due to the band being REALLY obscure, I had to rely on their Facebook and memory from the Lagrimas instagram stories about it. Forgive me if I get anything wrong here.)

August 12th, 2023 Update: I dm'd the Lagrimas Insta page about Juice's old band (this one lol) and got some more information so this should be more accurate to their history (hopefully).

Cry The Monarch @ Riverside (10/6/2015)

Cry the Monarch formed in 2014, shortly after their (at the time) guitarist, Juice, had left High School in order to pursue music. During an event called "Growing Up is Dumb," they would throw an unofficial after party where they would ask bandmembers of Old Gray if they could perform at Juice's house to which they agreed. August 2nd, 2014 (I assume) would be the day where Cry the Monarch would do their first ever show. They wouldn't have an online presence until mid 2015 with the creation of their Facebook page. On June 28th, 2015, they would announce their first and only ever EP release titled, "If I Give Up" which would be released via cassette tapes through structures//agony records. These tapes would be sold with a limit of 25 in a blue grey tint. However, it wouldn't be until October 1st when their EP was officially released along with the tapes.

From there on, they would play shows in a variety of locations throughout southern California including multiple shows with All My Wishes Were Thrown Down A Well And Should Die There. These shows would range from the Che Cafe in San Diego to Bridgetown in La Puente.

Eventually, life would catch up to them and the band would slowly start drifting apart within the start of 2016. They would continue until May 24, 2016, where they would play their last show with New Berlin, Cheer Up Charlie, Andy's Room, and Nuance. Their page would hint at another show in December but that event never happened due to the band now being a thing of the past.

After the page had over 2 years of silence, in July 2018, the page announced that there would be something coming soon and by December, they would make their Facebook band profile set to black. It would be silent until the page would announce their new project, Lagrimas, which would bring the era of Cry The Monarch to an end.

August 12, 2023 Update: Back in June, I dm'd the Lagrimas instagram page where I asked Juice about his old band, Cry the Monarch, and this is what he responded with.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The band started in 2014 right after I graduated high school, I was really into screamo at the time and wanted to start a band like all the ones I was getting into. Our first show ever was at my house, with one of my favorite bands ever old gray. There was a big fest called growing up is dumb happening in Pomona, and I decided to throw an unofficial after party/show and randomly asked old gray to play, and they were down!! They’re still one of my favorite bands and biggest inspirations so that was a very special show for me!
Eventually we all just kind of drifted apart and life started happening and eventually cry the monarch just slowly ended! I think around like 2016 we played our last show, I don’t remember exactly where it was honestly, I’ve been thinking about doing a reunion show for fun but idk if that’ll happen since one of the members doesn’t do music at all and the other one is a professional musician so he’s always too busy"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The entire journey of Cry The Monarch would be a straight forward journey. There were humble beginning for the band but it wouldn't lead to a large following nor would they band go out with a bang. It started out small and overtime, simply but slowly dissolved. While Cry The Monarch may not have gotten big, it sure was the humble beginnings for the band that the SoCal DIY scene now knows and loves, Lagrimas.

Our Eyes Go Blank Tonight

Obligatory Deftones reference in the name, Our Eyes Go Blank Tonight is a post-hardcore/Math rock band from Houston, Texas. Members of OEGBT met and formed in early 2022 as a group of friends from their highschool where they decided that it would be cool to start a band and play some music. By December 2022 they released their single, Done Waiting, before releasing their debut EP, year of us, in March of 2023. Despite only one official EP (as of writing this anyway lol) it is DEFINITELY worth your time. Their music comprises melodic tapping, fast paced songs, along with punchy riffs that combine twinkly emo with insane djenting in some of their more heavier songs. I highly recommend listening to "Monster Reserve" as it is their most powerful, eargasming producing track that they have and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them.

Edit: In light of new information, I feel like that it should be necessary to acknowledge a former member by the name of Jacob Adikson. A few months ago, as of writing this, Jacob was outed as an abusive predator whom raped a 14 year old and assaulted several people in the scene. Mind you, he is no longer in the band and was confirmed to be kicked out when this information was brought to light. OEGBT is a wonderful band that makes amazing music but Jacob is a sick bastard whose actions should be known to the public and have those around the scene to be wary of him.

Read more about them in this newsletter I found, it goes more in depth with their history and how they formed. They're a more recent band so right now is the time to experience them while they're still fresh!

JudgeMyHeart + Interview

A band forms, they release a few songs/demos, play a few shows, then break away or go on a hiatus, all within a short time span. There is no real way to prevent this sad yet common thing from happening so all that we can do is cherish their music and enjoy it while we still have them. That is how I learned to appreciate bands within my scene because bands like these are always a once in a lifetime experience. A small grain of sand on a beach. One of the most recent acts to join the "short-lived" category is none other than JudgeMyHeart.

JudgeMyHeart was a short-lived screamo band founded and based in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Since their formation in May 2022, they would proceed to record and upload a handful of demos on Youtube and Soundcloud before making their first official release for "Over" on all streaming platforms. Their original line up consisted of 4 members with one of them being a female vocalist but then reduced to being a trio towards their final few months. They played a show in Highland on June 3rd, 2023 before going on hiatus for about a month before they continued to play a few more shows. They would play their final show on August 7th and would break up due to personal drama surrounding the band. Members of the band would go on to play in So Concerned and No Bling.

JudgeMyHeart @ The Haven, Pomona (5/19/2023)

During their final month, I managed to get to see them live at a venue called The Haven in Pomona during an event called "Fuzzriot Fest" along with 5 other bands that day. I got to meet and talk to other SoCal DIY acts (Aren't We Amphibians, Me+You, and Lagrimas) along with two other bands from Jersey (Bulletproof Backpack and Catalyst.) Although I never got a chance to speak to the members of JMH the day of, I did eventually get to interview one of the band members a mere day before their last show. Below is the interview I had with David via the band's Insta DMs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me - May I know who I am speaking to?

David - This is David

Me - Tell me about JudgeMyHeart and how it started.

David - So in May 2022 I posted a demo on SoundCloud and Spencer slid up and he wanted to jam and one day super last minute he wanted to jam after school so we jammed in our ex singers garage and we clicked pretty quickly it felt very natural and it wasn’t till the next jam sesh that we added Xavier and that’s when the band really felt like complete at first.

It’s funny bc after the first jam, Spencer got us a spot on Liz’s bday show and we had a week to prepare for that as we literally just formed & it was so bad lol

Me - Lol, i mean it WAS your guys' first show so it obv wont be the best. What were some of your inspirations for your guys' sound?

David - For me Title Fight, iwrotehaikus and Blink-182. I’ll ask Spencer & Xavier though I know we all share title fight as an inspiration. (note: the next messages were later added) Xavier said youth novel, Blair & just the scene in general. Spencer said dag nasty, marginal man, and Elvis Costello.

Me - I remember a few months ago, you had your original main vocalist (i forgot her name tho) left the band then later saw a vague insta story about her. Idk if it is okay for me to ask about what happened behind the scenes but I am a bit curious. (you don't have to answer btw)

David - Yeah I’m sorry it’s just too much personal stuff to get into.

Me - that's alright, I understand that. Do you or anyone else plan to do anything after JMH? also I apologize for any uncomfortable vibes with that question.

David - Oh no you’re okay if I were you I’d wanna know too lol. But yeah I plan on starting a side project with some friends from Widowdusk, Spencer is in No Bling and Xavier plans on a side project with his homies as well.

Me - Oh cool! I'm pretty sure fans of JMH will be interested in hearing what the future holds for them. other than "Over" do you plan to post other JMH songs on streaming services?

David - Yes we do plan on releasing more after our haitus.

Me - are there any specific projects that you want to shout out or things to promote?

David - Nope, just thanks to everyone that cares about anything we do.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This hiatus may take weeks, months, or even years, but however long it takes, JudgeMyHeart will once again return to the scene. When exactly? I guess we'll never know. While this certainly wont be the last we hear from them, the only thing that we can do now is wait until they decide that it's the right time to come back together.

August 10, 2023 Update: JudgeMyHeart later retured from their hiatus which lasted about a few weeks before playing another show on July 14th with other notable Socal bands within the scene including herlovebeheadsdaisies from Texas. They would play their final show on August 7th with So Concerned, letsmakenothinghappen, we'rethecurrency, OneWayMirror, and Widowdusk before announcing on their Instagram that they will be no longer performing as a band along with a new EP. (it will be here when released.)

Announcement Story

JudgeMyHeart was honestly the main inspiration for wanting to write this blog in the first place. Seeing local bands, documenting, and getting to actually talk to them in real time is nothing but a blessing to me. It gives you the joy of discovering something new and wanting to learn more about who they are/were, what they do, their inspirations, etc. I highly recommend them as, to me, they will always have a special place in my heart for the Socal Underground scene.
